There are two recurring themes which seem to crop up every New Year.
The first is the number of people who will happily tell you that they will be glad to see the back of the old year. They have their various reasons and are all hoping for / looking forward to the new year to be happier, healthier, thinner, more fun, etc, etc. Well, I for one will be glad to see the back of 2014: a year that started with the deaths of my lovely uncle and my wonderful aunt; was filled with many emotional hours of clearing the latter’s house, plus days and weeks filled with a job which I’m really not enjoying; and ends with the Mater struggling a bit health-wise, having to deal with a leaky house, and trying to cope with life on her own.
But there have been good times too. Of course there have. Good times with lovely friends. Lots of singing. Fireworks. An incredible holiday in Canada. Laughs with the Boys (3) and the complete joy of being married to Mrs WeeKeef. I hope for more of all of those in 2015.
The second thing about New Year is that, though the world is full of parties, first-footing, firework displays, concerts and general revelry, nobody seems to get involved. Trust me, when you get back to work or school or whatever next week you will ask everyone if they had a good New Year and everyone will tell you that it was “very quiet”. Well somebody is making all that noise out there.
Anyway, this year Mrs WK and I are having a very quiet night in. Just the two of us, and it’s lovely. It’s our first time alone for a couple of weeks and we have eaten a couple of huge steaks, drunk some really nice wine and watched the first two Harry Potter movies.
It’s a good way to start a New Year and if 2015 continues along these lines I will be very content indeed. I hope you have a happy one too.
